In addition to a talented cadre of environmental lawyers and legislative advocates, Earthjustice has an amazing Communications department that works in partnership with every other department at the organization.
Earthjustice is seeking a seasoned digital leader to serve as Director of Digital Fundraising & Advocacy. The role sits at the intersection of the organization's Communication and Development teams and is responsible for translating Earthjustice's legal and advocacy work into compelling digital campaigns and strategies that both mobilize supporters and drive revenue. The Director will oversee an integrated program spanning email, SMS, web assets, and advertising. This role holds direct accountability for growing the organization's online fundraising and supporter base year over year.
This is a strategic leadership role that requires equal fluency in fundraising and advocacy — someone who can build campaigns that move people to act, give, and stay engaged over time.
This is a supervisory position, overseeing a team of 8 across the Digital Fundraising and Digital Advocacy sub-teams. Directly supervises three staff members:
- Associate Director of Digital Fundraising and Engagement
- Associate Director of Digital Advocacy
- Senior Audience Program Manager
The Director of Digital Fundraising & Advocacy is expected to work a full-time (37.5 hours/week) schedule. This position can be based in any of Earthjustice's offices or remotely from the U.S.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Leadership Responsibilities (20%)
- Build an integrated digital communication strategy for fundraising and advocacy, identifying opportunities for growth, new strategies, and achieving Earthjustice’s programmatic priorities.
- Serve as a productive, collaborative, and supportive member of the Communications Leadership Team and the Development Leadership Team. Collaborate closely with stakeholders across Communications, Development, and Program to build and execute integrated strategies that support institutional and departmental priorities.
- Manage team in developing email, SMS/MMS, web assets, and advertising campaigns for fundraising and advocacy goals. Co-lead the development of digital advertising strategy (with the Senior Director of Marketing), overseeing a $3M+ annual advertising budget to ensure strong brand awareness, supporter acquisition, and return on investment through online ads.
Digital Fundraising Strategy & Execution (30%)
- Lead strategy, development and execution of short and long-term plans for Earthjustice’s digital campaigns to engage, acquire, retain, and upgrade advocates and donors. Oversee the creation of digital communications, cultivation and stewardship programs for donors to ensure interactions with Earthjustice are of the highest quality possible across integrated channels.
- Develop annual expenses and hold accountability for the overall ROI of the digital program. Ensure a strong return on investment over time with the goal of increasing revenue year over year.
- Serve as the connective tissue between digital, communications, and programmatic leadership — ensuring campaigns are strategically aligned, brand-compliant, and grounded in agreed messaging frameworks.
- Strategize with each Development team responsible for securing public, mid-level, legacy, major and principal giving to coordinate the engagement, cultivation and solicitation of donors using scalable online solutions.
Digital Advocacy Strategy & Execution (30%)
- Lead strategy, development and execution of Earthjustice’s digital advocacy to grow and mobilize the supporter base around priority legal, legislative, and policy campaigns.
- Collaborate with the Public Affairs and Communications and Program and Policy & Legislation Department teams to create timely, high-quality action alerts, petition campaigns, and advocacy moments that deepen supporter investment in Earthjustice's mission and advance our programmatic goals.
- Integrate advocacy and fundraising tactics to convert advocates to donors and deepen engagement across the supporter journey.
Reporting & Technology (10%)
- Set data-informed, mission-driven goals and benchmarks. Continuously test and refine strategies to ensure they are delivering positive outcomes for Earthjustice.
- Partner with the Development department to optimize and evaluate Earthjustice’s technology, data hygiene, and integration is aligned with program priorities.
Management (10%)
- Champion a culture of testing, learning, and innovation across the digital program — establishing systematic A/B testing practices, creating space for experimentation with new channels and tactics. Partner with Communications colleagues to share insights, align on emerging opportunities, and ensure that learnings from digital campaigns inform broader organizational communications strategy.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of digital fundraising and advocacy professionals; create annual work plans with clear goals and priorities that support department and organizational objectives.
- Uphold Earthjustice’s mission and values by fostering a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment, providing clear direction and feedback, and promoting a culture of learning for all team members.
- Oversee relevant administrative, budgeting, and personnel management of direct reports, ensuring that all organizational policies and standards are met. Partner with Communications leadership on rolling out change management initiatives.

- Pursue innovative, best-in-class approaches to communications work and share those learnings with colleagues. Maintain an ongoing understanding of communications best practices and movement trends to ensure Earthjustice leads, not just follows.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- 10+ years of experience running digital fundraising and advocacy campaigns for mission-driven orgs. 7+ years of experience with team & departmental leadership, including management of people and complex projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields desired, but not required
- Demonstrated success running a high-volume digital campaigns that drive revenue and advocacy outcomes
- Ability to translate complex issues into compelling, accessible communications
- Ability to prioritize, manage multiple deadlines, and respond quickly to new opportunities and developments
- Ability to work collaboratively with other staff to meet shared cross-team goals and give honest, constructive, respectful feedback

SALARY & BENEFITS

Salaries at Earthjustice are determined by working location and are commensurate with the experience required.
- Salary range in New York, NY, and San Francisco, CA: $196,700 - $218,600
- Salary range in Washington, DC, Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, and Honolulu, HI: $186,900 - $207,700
- Salary Range in Denver, CO, Juneau, AK, Anchorage, Alaska, Providence, RI, and Philadelphia, PA: $177,100 - $196,800
- Bozeman, MT, Maine, Richmond, VA, New Orleans, LA, Miami, and Texas (State): $167,300 - $185,900
- Salaries in other locations will vary: $167,300-$207,700
